Following a challenging season where AC Milan failed to secure qualification for European tournaments next season, the club has embarked on a new era with the appointment of Sporting Director Igli Tare and the return of former Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri. Tare recently addressed the media to discuss the club`s strategy for the upcoming season and the summer transfer window, specifically commenting on American internationals Yunus Musah and Christian Pulisic.
Regarding the situation of Yunus Musah, who is currently in discussions about a potential departure this summer, Tare provided clarity.
“I believe Musah is an excellent player,” Tare stated. “However, our project under coach Allegri requires midfielders with specific characteristics, particularly deep-lying profiles for a three-man midfield. Musah does not possess these specific traits. While he is capable of playing in both two or three-man midfields, his characteristics differ from what we are currently seeking. This is the primary reason behind our decision to explore different options.”
Tare further outlined the club`s transfer plans, mentioning the intent to recruit another midfielder and a striker, alongside securing a right-back and a left-back. He added that depending on player sales, they might also look to strengthen the winger and central defense positions. “The same applies to attacking wingers,” he said. “Our focus is entirely on optimizing the squad to perform at our best and be key contenders.”
While Yunus Musah`s future appears to lie away from the San Siro beyond the summer, the situation is considerably different for Christian Pulisic. Both Igli Tare and Massimiliano Allegri regard the American winger as a cornerstone of the team`s project.
“Pulisic is set to be a crucial player for the upcoming season,” Tare confirmed. “I will have the opportunity to discuss his contract renewal with CEO Giorgio Furlani at the appropriate time, but currently, our full attention is on the team`s preparation. I consider him one of the standout positive performers from the past season and a fundamental pillar for the next. He holds a central role within this squad.”
Over his two years at AC Milan, Musah featured in various midfield roles, making 80 appearances, but struggled to establish himself as a consistent, key member of the starting lineup. His versatility, seeing him deployed as a central midfielder, right-central midfielder, and occasionally even an attacking winger or right-back, while contributing to his game time, perhaps hindered his ability to cement a specific position or status within the squad.
In stark contrast, Pulisic enjoyed a highly impactful season, contributing 17 goals and 12 assists across 49 appearances in all competitions, solidifying his position as one of the Italian giants` best players. However, looking ahead to the 2026 World Cup hosted in his home country, the prospect of not participating in European club competitions next season might not be ideal for the American international`s development and profile.
