Atlético Madrid’s star player, Antoine Griezmann, has publicly conveyed a heartfelt apology to the club’s devoted fanbase.
This gesture comes as a final plea for forgiveness following his decision to leave the Rojiblancos for rivals Barcelona.
The prolific striker Griezmann indeed made a high-profile transfer from Spain’s capital to its Catalan counterpart in the summer of 2019.
However, the move ultimately proved unsuccessful for both parties, as the French international found it challenging to integrate into his new environment and Barcelona’s offensive system.
This led to a swift return to Atlético, initially on loan and then permanently in 2022.
On Sunday, after participating in his last home game for his beloved Atléti in their iconic red and white kit, Griezmann seized the opportunity to deliver his apology.
Addressing the fans at the Metropolitano stadium after a 1-0 victory over Girona, the 35-year-old stated:
“This is where things become difficult for me. Firstly, I thank you all for staying. It’s incredible. Secondly, and this is very important to me, I know many of you have already forgiven me, and perhaps some haven’t yet, but I want to apologize once more. I didn’t fully grasp the love I had here. I was very young. I made a mistake, I’ve reflected on it, and we’ve done everything possible to return and enjoy this again.”
Antoine Griezmann’s Public Apology to Atlético Madrid Fans
Atlético Madrid star Antoine Griezmann has issued a sincere apology to the club’s supporters for his previous move to Barcelona.
In a heartfelt address after his final home game of the season, Griezmann expressed his regret for leaving the club in 2019 for a high-profile transfer to La Liga rivals Barcelona.
The French forward acknowledged that the transfer did not work out as planned for either himself or Barcelona, as he struggled to adapt to his new surroundings and the team’s playing style.
This ultimately resulted in his return to Atlético, first on loan and then on a permanent basis in 2022.
Speaking to the fans at the Metropolitano stadium following a 1-0 win against Girona, Griezmann, 35, stated:
“Now is when everything gets difficult for me. First of all, thank you all for staying. This is unbelievable. Secondly, and something very important to me, I know many of you already did and some maybe still haven’t, but I want to apologise once again. I didn’t realise the love I had here. I was very young. I made a mistake, I reflected on it, and we did everything possible to come back and enjoy it all again.”
