Bayer Leverkusen has finalized the transfer of England U21 central defender Jarell Quansah, joining them from Premier League winners Liverpool.
Quansah, who made 58 senior appearances for Liverpool, has signed a five-year contract with Leverkusen, lasting until June 30, 2030, at the BayArena stadium.
The 22-year-old stated during his introduction that he gained a positive perspective of the team and club when Liverpool faced Leverkusen in the UEFA Champions League last season.
He added that during transfer talks, Leverkusen clearly outlined their ambitious plans, calling it a significant opportunity and a fresh challenge to contribute to the club`s current success.
A product of Liverpool`s academy, Quansah debuted for the first team after a loan spell at Bristol Rovers in 2023. He then played 33 times as the Reds secured the League Cup under manager Jürgen Klopp.
Quansah subsequently appeared in 13 top-flight games as Liverpool competed for the Premier League title last season.
With 36 youth international caps, Quansah was called up to Thomas Tuchel`s first England squad in March but didn`t play in the World Cup qualifiers. This summer, he was a key part of the England U21 team that won the UEFA European Championship by defeating Germany 3-2 in the final.
Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes expressed his pleasure, stating, “We are thrilled to sign Jarell Quansah, one of the most promising English central defenders. He`s fast, agile, and a skilled player.”
Rolfes added, “He`s already impressed in a Liverpool defense filled with world-class talent. Jarell adds significant dynamism, speed, and strength in duels to our defense, making him a vital future asset for the Werkself.”
Last season, Leverkusen finished the Bundesliga season in second place, having achieved an unbeaten title and DFB Cup win in 2023/24. Following this, Xabi Alonso departed for Real Madrid, with Erik ten Hag taking over as the new coach. Defenders Jonathan Tah and Jeremie Frimpong have also left, joining Bayern Munich and Liverpool, respectively. Additionally, Florian Wirtz moved to Liverpool this summer.
Ten Hag`s team is set to visit Brazil in July. Their 2025/26 season begins with a home DFB Cup match against Sonnenhof Großaspach between August 15-18, followed by the Bundesliga opener the next weekend, hosting Hoffenheim.
