Bayern Munich has secured their place in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals after an epic encounter against the 15-time champions, Real Madrid.
Here are three significant insights from the match.
Bayern’s Defence May Face Challenges Against PSG
On a night where Bayern confronted one of the world’s most formidable attacks, their defense was stretched in ways not previously observed. Real Madrid’s attacking trio frequently troubled Bayern’s backline for extended periods and could have scored more than their three goals.
Konrad Laimer and Josip Stanišić, continuing their season’s pattern, played slightly advanced from typical full-back positions, providing support to the midfield and forward lines. This strategy created significant open spaces for players like Arda Güler and Vinícius Júnior to exploit, leading to goals for their opponents multiple times during the tie. Vincent Kompany will need a more tactically astute setup when facing the reigning champions in the semi-finals.
Luis Enrique’s Paris Saint-Germain boasts talents like Ousmane Dembélé, Désiré Doué, and the exciting Georgian sensation Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, all of whom have demonstrated their prowess consistently over recent seasons. This was evident earlier in the campaign when they scored seven goals against a less experienced Bayer Leverkusen side and, more prominently, when PSG netted five against Inter Milan in last season’s final.
Michael Olise is Bayern’s Game-Changer
While many headlines following this match will highlight other players, Michael Olise once again delivered an outstanding performance, ultimately securing Bayern’s spot in the final four with the decisive last kick of the game.
After causing nightmares for Spanish full-back Álvaro Carreras in the first leg in Madrid, the Frenchman repeated the feat against the far more experienced Ferland Mendy in Bavaria. Mendy struggled to contain Olise’s speed and skillful footwork, most notably in the 93rd minute. The former Crystal Palace player received the ball on the right wing, effortlessly cut inside, and without hesitation, curled a shot into the far post.
Topping the Bundesliga assist charts with 18 and ranking fifth in scoring with 12 goals, Olise has been exceptional all season, firmly establishing himself as one of the world’s premier wingers.
Bayern’s Remarkable Resilience
Although the first leg in Madrid appeared relatively comfortable at times, Vincent Kompany’s squad found themselves in much more precarious situations throughout the second leg. With the aggregate score tied just a minute into the game due to an uncharacteristic error from Manuel Neuer, heads could have fallen. However, the Bavarians responded almost instantly, with Aleksander Pavlović restoring parity just five minutes later.
Despite another setback half an hour in, when Neuer perhaps could have saved an Arda Güler free-kick, Harry Kane ensured Bayern responded swiftly once again, equalizing just eight minutes later.
A further blow struck before halftime, as Kylian Mbappe restored the visitors’ lead on the night. Real Madrid continued their counter-attacking approach in the second half, and despite Bayern dominating for significant periods, it seemed the tie was heading for extra time.
However, minutes before the final whistle, Kompany’s team maintained their composure when others might not have. After Eduardo Camavinga was sent off, Bayern sensed their opportunity and sealed the tie.
