Borussia Mönchengladbach is reportedly eyeing two defenders currently playing in Germany’s 2.Bundesliga. With funds available from the recent €21m sale of Rocco Reitz to RB Leipzig, Gladbach is poised to strengthen its defensive lineup this summer.
Reinforcing the Left-Back Position
David Herold, a 23-year-old left-back from Karlsruher SC, is a key target. He has a release clause estimated between €3.5-4m. With his contract set to expire in 2027, this transfer window represents KSC’s last significant opportunity to monetize his sale. Herold has impressed with 26 appearances and five assists for the eighth-placed 2.Bundesliga club.
Current left-back options for Gladbach include Lukas Ullrich, with midfielder Jens Castrop occasionally filling in, highlighting a clear need for reinforcement.
Strengthening Central Defence
Centre-back is another area of focus, where Gladbach reportedly lacks both quality and depth, often relying on midfielder Philipp Sander in a makeshift defensive role.
Linus Gechter, a 22-year-old centre-back from Hertha Berlin, is also on their radar. Gechter is understood to be seeking a move away from the capital, attracting interest from five to six Bundesliga clubs, with preliminary discussions already underway.
For both Herold and Gechter, Borussia Mönchengladbach anticipates significant competition from other Bundesliga clubs.
