Cristian Chivu Takes Over as Inter Milan Head Coach

Football News

Inter Milan has confirmed the appointment of club legend Cristian Chivu as their new head coach. This move follows the departure of Simone Inzaghi, who has taken on a new role with Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal. Chivu, a key member of Inter`s 2010 Champions League-winning squad, has signed a contract that will keep him at the helm until June 30, 2027. His decision to join the Nerazzurri comes after he declined to extend his recent agreement with Parma.

Chivu is a familiar figure within the Inter setup, having previously managed the club`s U19 team for several years. While his senior coaching experience is relatively limited, including a brief 13-match stint at Parma during the 2024-25 Serie A season, his deep understanding of Inter`s culture is expected to be a significant asset. Simone Inzaghi, whom Chivu replaces, had a successful tenure at Inter, guiding the team to two Champions League finals and securing multiple domestic cup titles and one Serie A Scudetto.

Prior to Chivu`s appointment, Inter were reportedly exploring options for a young manager to initiate a new era at the club, with a focus on youth development. One prominent candidate was former Barcelona and Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas, currently managing Como. However, Como`s president, Mirwan Suwarso, publicly refused to entertain any discussions, stating their firm commitment to keeping Fabregas. Former NYCFC coach Patrick Vieira was also among the names considered by the club`s hierarchy.

Following the unavailability of other potential candidates, Inter opted to bring back Chivu, who had a distinguished playing career with the club from 2007 to 2014 and later began his coaching journey within their youth academy from 2018 until his temporary move to Parma earlier this year to assist in their Serie A campaign.

A major immediate task for Cristian Chivu will be leading the team in the upcoming expanded FIFA Club World Cup. The tournament is set to take place in the United States starting June 14, where Inter Milan will compete in the group stages against Monterrey, Urawa Reds, and River Plate.
