Reports indicate that Crystal Palace have initiated direct discussions with a player from rivals Brighton & Hove Albion regarding a possible transfer to Selhurst Park this summer.
Europa League Qualification Uncertainty for Palace
While Brighton finished above Palace in the Premier League last season, a transfer to Selhurst Park might be more appealing this summer because Palace qualified for the Europa League after winning the FA Cup.
However, there remains uncertainty over whether Crystal Palace will be permitted to participate in the competition next season due to concerns about multi-club ownership. UEFA`s decision on this matter has been postponed until Monday.
Compounding the situation, French side Lyon, despite financial challenges, have reportedly agreed to compete in the Europa League next season, potentially affecting Palace`s entry even after John Textor`s reported sale to Woody Johnson.
While awaiting clarity on their European status, Crystal Palace are actively pursuing summer transfer targets, having already made approaches for players like Andy Diouf and Ousmane Diomande.
According to a report from El Diario Vasco, relayed by Sport Witness, Palace have reportedly made a significant move by holding direct talks with Brighton`s Igor Julio regarding a possible transfer to Selhurst Park.
Direct contact has been made with Igor, but Crystal Palace face competition for his signature. Premier League rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers and La Liga club Real Sociedad are also reportedly interested.
The Brazilian defender is reportedly keen on a move to Sociedad, favouring a departure from England this summer. However, the Spanish club is concerned that Palace or Wolves might outbid them, noting that English clubs often have significant financial resources.
Potential Impact of Igor Julio Signing
Signing the 27-year-old defender would not only represent a coup over rivals but also provide a valuable addition to manager Oliver Glasner`s squad, especially considering the need for depth if the team participates in European competition.
Journalist Lorenzo Lepore has previously praised the defender highly, stating: `Igor is a really great defender, who is capable of helping his team in both phases of play: he’s competent with his feet and in defence.`
Lepore added: `He has excellent technique and he is a capable playmaker, too. He is strong, he is good in one-on-one situations.`
Since that assessment, the defender, valued at £15m, has proven himself in the Premier League, playing regularly for Brighton when available. However, his injury record last season, missing 18 games, could be a point of concern.
Igor could be a strong acquisition for Palace, especially if they need to sign a new centre-back this summer due to uncertainty surrounding Marc Guehi`s future. However, it remains questionable whether Brighton would be willing to sell a player to a direct rival.
