Borussia Dortmund has officially announced that midfielder Felix Nmecha is facing an extended period on the sidelines. He sustained a lateral collateral ligament (LCL) injury in his knee during the team’s recent 3-2 comeback victory over Hamburg, an ailment expected to keep him out of action for several weeks.
Consequently, Nmecha will be unavailable for Germany’s upcoming international fixtures. These include matches against Switzerland on March 27th and Ghana on March 30th. National team coach Julian Nagelsmann is now tasked with finding a suitable replacement for the 25-year-old midfielder, with an official decision yet to be announced.
Felix Nmecha’s Impactful Season So Far
The Dortmund midfielder had been a consistent presence this season, participating in every Bundesliga fixture and solidifying his role as a crucial asset under coach Niko Kovač. His strong performances were recently rewarded with a new long-term contract, extending his stay at the club until June 2030.
During the Hamburg match, Julian Brandt, whose contract with BVB is set to expire at the end of the current season leading to his departure, stepped in for Nmecha during stoppage time.
National Team Woes: Germany’s Midfield Dilemma
Nmecha’s absence creates further complications for Nagelsmann’s midfield selection. Reports indicate that Bayern Munich’s Aleksandar Pavlovic has also withdrawn from the national squad for the upcoming games, joining Nmecha and Leon Goretzka on the injury list. While not yet officially confirmed, Angelo Stiller from VfB Stuttgart is reportedly slated to step in for Pavlovic, highlighting the growing challenges for Germany’s midfield ahead of these crucial encounters.
