Football sensation Erling Haaland is extending his influence beyond the pitch, aiming to inspire his fellow Norwegians not just through his athletic achievements but also by connecting them with their rich historical heritage, particularly the Viking era.

The prolific Manchester City forward, renowned as Norway's leading goal scorer with an impressive 55 goals in 48 matches, has generously gifted a rare 16th-century manuscript detailing Viking sagas to the Norwegian community where he spent his formative years.

Although born in Leeds while his father, Alf-Inge, was a player for Leeds United, Haaland's childhood was primarily spent in the Norwegian town of Bryne.

In December, the 25-year-old footballer and his father jointly acquired the manuscript for 1.3 million Norwegian crowns, equivalent to £100,000. This transaction set a new national record for a book sale in Norway.

This particular edition, printed in 1594, is based on the writings of the 13th-century historian Snorri Sturluson. It contains captivating medieval tales of Viking royalty, common farmers, and formidable warriors.

Haaland ensured that this unique surviving copy found its permanent home at the Bryne library, where it will be showcased and made available for public viewing and study.

Located in western Norway, approximately 30 kilometers south of Stavanger, Bryne is situated within the Time municipality, part of the wider Jæren district.

Speaking to Norwegian media, Haaland expressed his wish: "My desire is for this book to always be accessible, allowing people to delve into the stories of those who originated from my home region, from Bryne and Jæren."

He further elaborated on his motivation, stating, "I've been incredibly fortunate to realize my dream in football, a path not everyone has the opportunity to pursue. Books, however, offer countless individuals the chance to dream grandly, discover new horizons, and forge their own unique journeys."

This season, Haaland continues his impressive form as the Premier League's leading goal scorer, having netted 22 times in 29 appearances.

In the previous year, he also led the scoring charts in the European qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup with 16 goals. Notably, Norway secured their spot in the World Cup finals for the first time since 1998.
