Key Statistics and Career Path
Born on 8 August 2004, Gittens spent his childhood in Reading, a town located about 45 miles west of London. He began his football journey at the local youth academy at U9 level – the same club where Bayern Munich`s Michael Olise previously played. Despite declining an offer from Chelsea, he eventually relocated north to join Manchester City`s academy as an U15 player.
The right-footed forward`s talent was evident, leading to him regularly competing in older age groups. He earned his debut for the England U16s in August 2019, just under three weeks after his 15th birthday. He made an immediate impact, scoring the opening goal in a 3-3 draw against the Republic of Ireland.
Only a month later, Gittens featured in the U18 Premier League for City, coming on as a half-time substitute to score the final goal in a 5-2 victory over Liverpool. His move to Germany came in September 2020, where he was part of the Dortmund U19 team that reached the UEFA Youth League quarter-finals in the 2021/22 season, contributing six goals in five appearances.
A significant milestone arrived when Gittens made his senior debut for Dortmund against Wolfsburg on 16 April 2022. He was also a key member of the England squad that won the European U19 Championship, playing four matches in the tournament and starting the final victory over Israel on 1 July 2022. He scored his first Bundesliga goal on Matchday 2 of the 2022/23 season against Freiburg, coinciding with his 18th birthday week.
Since then, Gittens` career has continued to progress. He made his UEFA Champions League debut in 2023/24, netting a goal against AC Milan and participating as a late substitute in the final held in London. He also earned his first caps for the England U21 team in 2023/24. The 2024/25 season marked his most productive Bundesliga campaign in terms of goal contributions, including scoring five goals in seven matches between November 2024 and January 2025, and a spectacular goal in a 1-1 Klassiker draw against Bayern Munich. His current contract with Dortmund extends until summer 2028.
Playing Style: A Comparison to Karim Adeyemi
Gittens presents an interesting contrast to his fellow Dortmund winger, Karim Adeyemi, who plays on the opposite flank. While perhaps not possessing Adeyemi`s outright top speed, Gittens` pace is formidable; his top speed after 25 games in 2024/25 (22.34 mph) is comparable to Adeyemi`s and places him among the ten fastest players in the Bundesliga. He also ranked in the top 20 for sprints at the same point in the season. Gittens complements his pace with exceptional dribbling ability and flair, making him a formidable challenge for defenders when he`s on form.
