Liverpool, the champions of the English Premier League, have officially confirmed the signing of Jeremie Frimpong from Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen. The versatile Dutch player arrived at Leverkusen during the 2020/21 season and became an instrumental part of Xabi Alonso`s squad that achieved a historic league and cup double in the 2023/24 campaign.
Since joining Leverkusen from Scottish club Celtic, Frimpong showcased his blistering speed, forward drive, dribbling skills, and strong work ethic. However, his performances significantly improved after Xabi Alonso took over as head coach in October 2022.
In Alonso`s initial partial season, he registered eight goals and seven assists as Leverkusen finished sixth. He surpassed this in the historic 2023/24 season, achieving a personal best of nine goals and nine assists. During this unforgettable campaign, Leverkusen shed their `Neverkusen` tag by securing their first-ever Bundesliga title, completing a remarkable domestic double which also included reaching the Europa League final.
His impactful contributions and statistics attracted the attention of Liverpool, a club that had previously attempted to sign him as a youngster before he joined Manchester City`s academy in 2010. A transfer agreement for the Dutch international was finalized soon after the conclusion of the successful 2023/24 season. Frimpong departs the Bundesliga having made 133 appearances for Leverkusen, scoring 23 goals and providing 28 assists.
“Leverkusen represented a truly special chapter in what I hope will be a lengthy professional career,” stated Frimpong. “What we accomplished collectively here is incredible. Winning the double was a deeply moving and unforgettable moment, especially since few believed we could achieve it in such a manner. I will always feel a connection to Leverkusen; this club holds a significant place in my personal history. I extend my gratitude to Bayer 04 and the fans for a fantastic period.”
Leverkusen`s sporting director, Simon Rolfes, commented on the transfer, saying, “Jeremie perfectly illustrates the successful strategy Bayer 04 Leverkusen has often followed: identifying and developing young, highly talented players from smaller leagues into elite performers. This move also allows us to continue shaping our future squad.”
“`Jerry` was a key figure in our double-winning side, becoming a fan favourite due to his distinctive style and strong performances. He now seeks to challenge himself in the Premier League with Liverpool FC, and we sincerely wish him the very best.”
