Liverpool`s sporting director, Richard Hughes, is reportedly finalising details for Milos Kerkez`s transfer from Bournemouth. This potential signing is seen as a good move for Anfield, particularly as veteran left-back Andy Robertson, described by pundit Jamie Carragher as an `absolute legend`, has been noted as `hanging on in every game` for Arne Slot`s side this season.
In other transfer activity, Liverpool has already secured a replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold, who joined Real Madrid on a free transfer after his contract ended, by signing Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen for £29.5m.
While further squad adjustments are anticipated, particularly in forward positions, Liverpool has clearly signalled their intention to reinforce the central defence this summer. They notably pursued Dean Huijsen before he opted for Real Madrid despite considerable Premier League interest.
Why Liverpool Needs a Defender
Virgil van Dijk, a two-time Premier League champion, demonstrated immense dominance and consistency as captain last season. Although his recent contract extension secures him for two more years, he will soon turn 34, making it crucial for Liverpool to identify a long-term successor.

Dean Huijsen, labelled `the perfect left centre-back` by analyst Ben Mattinson, would have been an ideal solution. The 20-year-old Spain international plays with a maturity well beyond his age and would have helped solidify Liverpool`s defence for years if he had joined.
While FSG is known for strategic market moves, the need for defensive depth is undeniable. Ibrahima Konate was signed in 2021, and no other senior centre-back has followed since.
Adding to the situation, Konate is reportedly a target for Real Madrid next summer as a free agent, although Liverpool is currently in discussions to extend the French defender`s contract.
With Jarell Quansah`s future also uncertain, securing an alternative to Huijsen to ease the load on Van Dijk and the existing defenders is essential. It seems Liverpool has now pinpointed the player for this role.
Liverpool Targets New Centre-Back
According to reports from Caught Offside, Liverpool has joined the pursuit of Bayern Munich`s central defender, Kim Min-jae. Sources close to the South Korean player suggest that he is expected to be available for transfer from the Allianz Arena this summer.
With all parties reportedly seeking a quick resolution, Bayern has reduced their asking price from €50m (£44m) to approximately €35m (£30m). This valuation would be favourable for the Reds, considering their need for reinforcements across several positions.

Given that Chelsea and Newcastle United are also reportedly exploring a move for the player, Liverpool would be well-advised to step up their interest and attempt to secure the signing quickly.
What Kim Min-Jae Offers Liverpool
Kim hasn`t consistently reached his peak form at Bayern, but he showcased his elite-level defensive abilities during his time in Serie A with Napoli. His former teammate, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, famously nicknamed him an “iron barrel” due to his defensive solidity.

Former Napoli manager Luciano Spalletti believes Kim has the capability to become `the best centre-back in the world`. He was a pivotal figure, a “colossus,” in Napoli`s 2022/23 Scudetto-winning season, contributing to 14 clean sheets across 35 league matches.
Kim`s profile, combining physicality with technical elegance, is characteristic of a modern defender. His strength suggests he is well-equipped to thrive in the demanding environment of the Premier League.
Bayern signed the 28-year-old from Napoli in July 2023 after meeting his £43m release clause. While Bayern did secure the Bundesliga title this season, Kim`s debut term had moments of difficulty, including making four direct errors leading to goals, according to Sofascore.
However, despite these instances, the £194k-per-week defender has also delivered impressive performances. His statistics include completing 93% of his passes, averaging 5.7 ball recoveries per game, and winning 65% of his aerial duels.
His aerial prowess, accurate and progressive passing, and suitability for the left side of defence indicate he could be an excellent partner for Van Dijk. Data analysis site FBref also highlights a tactical resemblance between the two players.
