Man City Eye £65m Goalkeeper as Ederson Replacement

Football News

According to reports, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has personally asked the club to sign an “incredible” goalkeeper to replace Ederson.

Guardiola Dissatisfied After Club World Cup Exit

The team`s surprising exit from the Club World Cup against Al-Hilal was unexpected, particularly as Guardiola`s side had appeared dominant in their preceding 5-2 win over Juventus in the final group match.

However, Al-Hilal advanced to the quarter-finals with a 4-3 victory. Ederson made only two saves during the match, continuing a 2024-25 season that has not met the high expectations set by the Brazilian goalkeeper`s usual standards.

Last season, football pundit Roy Keane was notably critical of Ederson, stating the goalkeeper was “getting away with murder” and suggesting Guardiola should consider dropping the player who has won the Premier League title six times.

Crucially, a report from Spain indicates that the City manager is becoming frustrated with Ederson`s performance level. Guardiola is reportedly deeply unhappy with the team`s Club World Cup elimination and is keen to acquire a new goalkeeper this summer.

Consequently, Pep has personally asked for the signing of FC Porto`s Diogo Costa. The goalkeeper has a €75m (£65m) release clause in his contract, a fee considered within Manchester City`s financial reach.

Costa is reportedly open to leaving Porto this summer, despite his contract being valid until 2027, as he is keen to test his abilities at the highest level before the 2026 World Cup.

`Incredible` Costa Shines for Club and Country

Diogo Costa is highly-rated by his peers.

His Portugal national teammate, Diogo Dalot, has previously expressed high praise for the goalkeeper, stating: “I think Portugal’s secret is Diogo Costa. Diogo Costa is the most hidden secret in European football and today he showed up.”

Dalot added: “Today I think he reached a completely different level. His handling of one-on-one situations was incredible. He then maintained focus to make three consecutive saves. We should be very proud of him.”

Beyond his performances for the national team, the 25-year-old has also maintained a high level for Porto over the last year, demonstrating a very impressive clean sheet percentage compared to other goalkeepers.

Key Goalkeeping Metric Average per 90
Clean Sheet Percentage 50% (95th Percentile)
Goals Against 0.84 (90th Percentile)

While Pep is concerned by Ederson`s recent displays, replacing the Brazilian, who has been crucial to City`s recent triumphs, will be challenging. However, Costa`s performances suggest he could be a fitting successor in goal.
