Man City: Pep wants to sign £162,000-a-week “best goalkeeper in the world”

Football News

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has reportedly made a personal request to sign a goalkeeper described by some as the `best in the world`, according to a recent report.

Manchester City Eyeing Goalkeeper Amidst Ederson Doubts

Concerns have arisen regarding the future of current City goalkeeper Ederson at the Etihad Stadium. Former club financial advisor Stefan Borson indicated that Ederson has considered leaving on several occasions over the past few years, potentially tempted by offers from Saudi Arabia or simply seeking a new environment.

While it`s now understood that the Brazilian intends to see out his contract, which is set to expire next summer, Guardiola has reportedly begun exploring potential replacements for the shot-stopper.

Ederson`s performance in the Club World Cup match against Al-Hilal, where City suffered a surprising defeat conceding four goals and he received the lowest SofaScore rating among City players, did not help his cause.

In contrast, Al-Hilal`s Yassine Bounou delivered a remarkable performance in the same game, achieving an 8.9 match rating after making eight saves from inside the box. Guardiola is reportedly very impressed with the Moroccan goalkeeper.

A report from Spain claims that Guardiola has specifically requested the signing of Bounou, with Manchester City continuing to investigate options to strengthen their goalkeeper position before the next Premier League season commences.

Despite earning a lucrative £162,000 per week with the Saudi Pro League side, a move back to Europe might appeal to the 34-year-old veteran. His recent performance against Guardiola`s team suggests he still possesses the capabilities required to succeed in the English top flight.

Bounou Touted as `the Best Goalkeeper in the World`

Yassine Bounou has received high praise from various figures. Former Saudi Arabia international Mohamed Al-Deayea referred to him as `the best goalkeeper in the world` less than a year ago, and Argentina`s World Cup-winning goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez also called Bounou the best at the 2022 tournament.

However, at 34 years old, Bounou is older than Ederson, which raises questions about his viability as a long-term replacement. Signing a younger goalkeeper might be a more prudent decision for the club`s future.

While Bounou is clearly a talented player who arguably deserves a chance at a top European club, his age is a factor. Furthermore, Al-Hilal may be reluctant to agree to his departure, especially following his impressive display against Manchester City.
