Journalist Orazio Accomando has revealed that Manchester United have initiated discussions with the representatives of a player valued at £34 million, described as `the best in his role globally`.
Man Utd`s Attacking Performance Needs Boost
Manchester United`s 2024-25 season was one of their poorest in recent history. Despite this, they managed to create 400 scoring opportunities in the Premier League, ranking them sixth in the division.
These statistics suggest that the primary issue isn`t a lack of chance creation, but rather a lack of clinical finishing and attacking output. With their main forwards contributing a low number of goals combined, it is understandable that the Red Devils are now looking to strengthen their offensive options, including seeking more creativity from midfield.
Furthermore, there appears to be a desire to reduce the creative burden currently placed heavily on Bruno Fernandes, who was directly involved in nearly half of the 44 Premier League goals scored by United last season.
Consequently, a move has been initiated for a new creative midfielder. Accomando stated on X that Manchester United have contacted the agents of Inter Milan star Hakan Çalhanoğlu, who is reportedly looking to depart the Italian club this summer.
The Turkish midfielder is reportedly keen on returning to his home country to play for Galatasaray. However, the reigning Turkish champions are only able to offer up to €15 million (£13 million), whereas Inter Milan is seeking a transfer fee closer to €40 million (£34 million).
Fulham are also said to have made contact regarding a potential deal for Çalhanoğlu. If a bidding war develops, Galatasaray may find it challenging to complete the transfer.
Çalhanoğlu`s Impact at Inter Milan
The 31-year-old has been a consistent source of goals and assists for Inter over several seasons, contributing to 70 goals in 182 appearances for the club. This record suggests he could provide valuable attacking support, potentially alongside or for Bruno Fernandes.
However, the Inter and Turkey international has predominantly featured and excelled in a deep-lying playmaker position. Turkey manager Vincenzo Montella has praised his effectiveness in this role, stating: “Hakan has been the best in his role in the world in recent years.”
Confident in his own ability, the 2025 Champions League finalist has also compared himself favourably to elite midfielders, remarking: “I’m not far from De Bruyne or Modric. Maybe in this period, those who play in the Premier League have more visibility.”
A transfer to Old Trafford would mark Çalhanoğlu`s first experience in the Premier League, offering him an opportunity to prove his capabilities on the world stage. However, Manchester United should exercise caution when considering a £34 million investment in a 31-year-old player.
