According to recent reports, Manchester United is exploring options for a new goalkeeper, potentially seeking an upgrade or replacement for Andre Onana. A less prominent target has reportedly been identified.
As the summer transfer window progresses towards its early September deadline, United continues to assess its squad and potential additions. While they are actively pursuing attacking reinforcements, with reports of progress in talks for Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt and continued interest in Bryan Mbeumo of Brentford, attention is also being paid to the goalkeeping position.
Italian outlet Corriere della Sera, as relayed by Sport Witness, suggests that Manchester United is showing interest in signing Atalanta goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi. The report indicates that United views the 24-year-old Italian as a suitable candidate to potentially replace Onana.
Atalanta reportedly values Carnesecchi at around €40 million, which equates to roughly £34 million. However, given that the keeper is under contract until 2028, negotiations could prove challenging. The report specifically highlights the significant fee United previously paid Atalanta for striker Rasmus Hojlund, suggesting a potentially tough negotiation stance from the Italian club.
Carnesecchi has progressed through Atalanta`s academy since joining in 2017. After being promoted to the first team in 2019, he became the regular starting goalkeeper during the 2023/24 and 2024/25 seasons. Last season, he made 34 appearances in Serie A, keeping 13 clean sheets. He also featured nine times in the Champions League, impressively securing five clean sheets in those matches.
A potential move for Carnesecchi is likely contingent on Andre Onana`s future at Old Trafford. Onana has been linked with a transfer to Saudi Arabia in recent months, although no move has yet materialized. When questioned recently about his future with Manchester United, Onana responded, “Will I leave? I don`t know, we`ll see!”
