Manchester United Prioritizes “Spectacular” £51m Arsenal Defender for Key Reinforcement

Brazilian Football

According to reports from Fichajes, Manchester United are reportedly keen on acquiring Arsenal’s young left-back, Myles Lewis-Skelly, in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Lewis-Skelly gained prominence during the 2024–25 season, capitalizing on opportunities amid an injury-plagued period for his club.

However, despite featuring in a UEFA Champions League match against the formidable 15-time champions Real Madrid less than a year ago, he is currently struggling for consistent playing time.

While he has appeared in six of Arsenal’s nine Champions League games, contributing to significant victories against teams like Bayern Munich, Atlético Madrid, and Inter Milan, his Premier League involvement this season has been minimal, totaling only 312 minutes. He currently ranks third among left-back options, with his sole league start occurring in a 2–1 victory against Brighton & Hove Albion last December.

His limited domestic appearances have fueled speculation about a potential move to secure more regular game time as the transfer window approaches.

Fichajes reports that Manchester United, the 13-time Premier League champions, are among the clubs keen on Lewis-Skelly, viewing the 19-year-old as a viable candidate to bolster their left-back department.

Although the Red Devils are also reportedly considering Tyrick Mitchell from Crystal Palace, Antonee Robinson from Fulham, and David Raum from RB Leipzig, the same report indicates that Lewis-Skelly is the ‘preferred option’ for their recruitment team.

Nevertheless, Fichajes also suggests that Arsenal is hesitant to let the England international leave the Emirates Stadium and would only entertain offers approaching £51 million to sanction his transfer.

United’s Defensive Overhaul and Lewis-Skelly’s Appeal

With the summer transfer window approaching, significant pressure is on United’s management to construct a squad capable of mounting a serious title challenge, especially after several seasons marked by inconsistency and underperformance.

However, before any deals can be finalized, United faces a critical end to their current campaign, as securing UEFA Champions League qualification will be paramount in attracting their top transfer targets.

Currently, United’s left-back options include Luke Shaw and Patrick Dorgu. However, manager Michael Carrick reportedly sees Dorgu’s strengths in a more attacking capacity, a role in which he performed exceptionally well prior to his injury.

It is anticipated that Dorgu will revert to this attacking role upon his recovery, underscoring the necessity for United to acquire a more defensively oriented left-back next summer.

Following a strong performance in Arsenal’s 3-0 victory over Real Madrid last season, football pundit and Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher lauded Lewis-Skelly as ‘spectacular’ during his post-match commentary.

Consequently, this versatile defender could be a valuable addition, capable of immediately integrating into United’s defense and potentially succeeding Luke Shaw once his contract concludes at the end of next season.
