Augsburg forward Michael Gregoritsch has received widespread acclaim for his “fair play” during Saturday’s 1-1 Bundesliga draw against Hamburg. While the match featured several notable moments, the Austrian striker’s candid admission that he was not fouled near the penalty box late in the first half became the game’s primary discussion point.
How Michael Gregoritsch Showed True Sportsmanship
The 31-year-old Austrian international recently rejoined the Bundesliga on loan from Brøndby, returning to German football just six months after his departure. Gregoritsch has consistently expressed his deep affection for the league, where he has accumulated 282 appearances across four different top-flight clubs. On Saturday, this “fan-favorite” truly honored the league he holds dear.
Hamburger SV was among Gregoritsch’s former teams. Before his initial spell with the Fuggerstädter (Augsburg), Gregoritsch played two seasons in Hamburg from 2015 to 2017. Even though Saturday’s relegation “six-pointer” carried immense importance, Gregoritsch chose not to gain an unfair advantage against his previous club.
As the first half drew to a close, Augsburg held a 1-0 lead. In the 45+3 minute, referee Deniz Aytekin awarded a free-kick to Augsburg in a dangerous position just outside the penalty area. Since this incident wasn’t eligible for VAR review, Aytekin approached Gregoritsch, who was receiving treatment on the touchline, to clarify the situation. Gregoritsch then truthfully recounted the events.
Gregoritsch unequivocally stated that Hamburg’s Fabio Vieira had not fouled him; in fact, he admitted it was the reverse. Consequently, Aytekin rescinded the free-kick. In the mixed zone, journalists showered Gregoritsch with praise as he elaborated that, regardless of the match’s significance, he did not want to be involved in a situation that could have led to a potentially devastating goal against HSV.
Merlin Polzin Extols Gregoritsch’s Conduct
“I must highlight that Gregoritsch’s conduct just before halftime was truly commendable,” Polzin stated during his opening remarks at the post-match press conference. “And I believe that particular incident likely merits more focus than many of the other on-field occurrences we might discuss today.”
When asked about his conversation with Gregoritsch, Polzin replied, “I simply wanted to discuss the incident with him. It’s clear what an honorable sportsman he is, to clarify the situation accurately. His behavior in such a moment was absolutely top-class.”
Polzin added, “I also apologized to him for our reaction to an earlier potential penalty incident. HSV greatly enjoyed his time here; he clearly hasn’t changed. He remains the same honorable sportsman he was during his tenure with us.”
Manuel Baum Commends Gregoritsch, Adds a Caveat
When addressing Gregoritsch’s actions, Baum stated, “I evaluate it precisely the same way as my colleague. It was an excellent gesture for him to admit there was no foul. However, I still dislike the concept of a match official asking a player for clarification.”
Baum continued, “What if he had responded differently? He would then be seen as the antagonist. If I were the referee, I wouldn’t place that responsibility on the players. I would take the responsibility myself; that’s the role of a referee.”
Baum concluded, “Nonetheless, I believe Gregi’s actions were appropriate. It’s commendable that he described the situation accurately. I commend Gregi, but I still wouldn’t involve players in such decisions. I don’t favor that approach.”
