Borussia Dortmund’s central defender, Nico Schlotterbeck, has once again addressed the ongoing speculation surrounding his contract extension, following a period of intense scrutiny from the German media. The 26-year-old sparked controversy during the recent international break by publicly stating that the club’s decision to part ways with sporting director Sebastian Kehl had influenced his desire to remain at BVB. Kehl was reportedly Schlotterbeck’s preferred contact for contract negotiations within the club’s front office.
Schlotterbeck’s Extension Talks and Performance
The controversy coincided with a notably underwhelming performance by Schlotterbeck for the German national team, prompting further questions about his focus. During Saturday night’s Bundesliga “Top-Spiel” against VfB Stuttgart, both Schlotterbeck and BVB managing director Lars Ricken offered their perspectives on the matter. Schlotterbeck insisted that his intention was simply to refute reports that had emerged the previous weekend claiming he had already agreed to an extension.
Lars Ricken Seeks to Smooth Things Over
Lars Ricken sought to alleviate concerns, telling Sky Germany before kickoff, “He mentioned some changes, but I don’t believe anything has fundamentally changed.” Ricken elaborated on a meeting held shortly after Schlotterbeck’s return from international duty: “We sat down together immediately on Monday, just Nico and me, without his agent. It was clear that our relationship of trust remains completely intact.” Ricken emphasized Schlotterbeck’s passion for the club and expressed optimism for future negotiations. “We won’t delay scheduling the next meeting. Nico has his expectations, and the club has its conditions. I’m approaching these talks with an optimistic mindset. Nico appeared very open and engaged.”
Schlotterbeck Clarifies His Stance
Following the match, Schlotterbeck further clarified his position to Sky Germany, stating, “I had a productive conversation with Lars and [new sporting director Nils] Ole [Book].” He explained his earlier remarks were not intended to be malicious towards the media or BVB, but rather an honest reaction to surprising reports. “I was just surprised [by the reports] and wanted to be honest.” Acknowledging the potential backlash, Schlotterbeck asserted his need to set the record straight: “I knew there would be criticism, but I wanted to clarify. Since it concerned me personally, I felt it necessary to correct what had been reported. If a media outlet claims I’m signing and I haven’t, I end up looking foolish.” He concluded, pragmatically, “I can’t please everyone.”
