Borussia Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck has unequivocally dismissed recent speculation regarding an imminent contract extension with the club. Speaking to reporters in the mixed zone after Germany’s 2-1 victory over Ghana, the prominent centre-back clarified his current situation.
Addressing questions about reports of a potential new deal, Schlotterbeck stated, “I must categorically deny that; unfortunately, we’re not there yet. What has been reported is unfortunately not true.” He elaborated on the complexities, mentioning previous lengthy discussions: “I negotiated with Sebastian [Kehl] for a long time, but he’s no longer with us.” The defender further explained the shift in circumstances: “I would probably have made a decision in the coming weeks, but the situation has changed a bit. I’ll be holding talks with Ole [Book], and we’re not at the stage where we’re on the verge of a deal. It’s a shame for BVB fans right now, but it’s not an easy situation for me either.”
This declaration contradicts earlier media reports from last week that suggested an extension was all but certain. The change in personnel at Borussia Dortmund, specifically the departure of Sebastian Kehl from his role and the subsequent arrival of Nils-Ole Book, appears to have significantly impacted the ongoing discussions with Schlotterbeck.
What Lies Ahead for Dortmund and Schlotterbeck?
The ongoing contract negotiations are now anticipated to be prolonged. This extended period of uncertainty could potentially create an opportunity for other interested clubs to initiate discussions with the 26-year-old defender about a possible transfer during the summer window. The situation remains fluid, with no immediate resolution in sight for the German international and his club.
