The German international sought to clarify why negotiations for his new deal took considerable time, and also to address public perception following critical comments he made about the club’s decision to make a significant change in management.
Nico Schlotterbeck’s Initial Disagreements with Borussia Dortmund
Schlotterbeck had previously expressed his dissatisfaction, stating that the club’s decision to dismiss long-time sporting director Sebastian Kehl left him without his “preferred negotiating partner.” This statement drew significant criticism from the German media, and the unwanted attention reportedly impacted Schlotterbeck’s performance during the international break, with the center-back appearing defensive after the Bundesliga season resumed.
The 26-year-old, who has 26 caps for Germany, clearly aimed to put these distractions behind him in the released video, especially with the upcoming summer World Cup. His new contract includes several advantages for all parties. Dortmund retains the option to receive a substantial transfer fee for Schlotterbeck should he decide to depart, while his new base salary of €10 million is a significant benefit for the player.
Schlotterbeck Explains His Commitment to BVB
“I’ve always said the same thing,” Schlotterbeck stated in the video. “As I mentioned after our Bundesliga match against Union Berlin [in late January], I simply wanted us all to sit down so I could hear the important points. I believe this is the right time to make the correct step for my career. I’m 26 years old and in the prime of my career. This is a landmark decision.”
“I think anyone can understand that I needed to take some time with it,” Schlotterbeck continued. “Fundamentally, I know what I have with this club. That’s why I made the ‘pro-BVB’ decision, and I’m happy about it. I’m a passionate individual both on the pitch and in the locker room. That fits well with the [Westphalian] Ruhrgebiet region.”
“I settled in quickly and felt comfortable here,” Schlotterbeck added. “I truly value the support I received after my injury [last year]. I understand what the fans expect from me, and I will do my best to give everything for BVB until my final match. I believe the fans appreciate that. I’m really pleased about the opportunity to continue with these fans.”
Schlotterbeck Reflects on a Difficult Past Week
“It was naturally a turbulent week with all the back-and-forth,” Schlotterbeck explained. “And there was, of course, what I said [about Sebastian Kehl]. It’s clear that I am extending my contract with the entire club, not just an individual. I would like to clarify that again. I know it may have upset some people. I did try to explain myself.”
“I wanted to understand how the club would develop and what goals they aimed to achieve in the coming years,” Schlotterbeck continued. “I’ve seen some positive developments ahead of next season. Of course, I want to win the [Bundesliga] title with BVB. They presented their plan to me. I took my time. Now I’m ready to chase titles with BVB.”
“We’ve come close before in recent years,” Schlotterbeck concluded. “I’ve seen the impact the club, city, and supporters can have. That’s why I’m here, and that’s why I’ve signed for another four years.”
