La Liga side Athletic Club has announced a significant development within its coaching staff. The club confirmed on Friday that head coach Ernesto Valverde will step down from his role at the conclusion of the current season. This decision was reached by mutual agreement between Valverde and the club’s management.
Valverde, who returned to the bench in Bilbao in 2022, has long been considered an iconic figure for Athletic Club. However, the current campaign has presented considerable difficulties for both the manager and the team.
Athletic currently finds itself in 10th position in the La Liga standings, having accumulated just 35 points from 28 fixtures played. This underperformance has led those behind the scenes at San Mamés to take decisive action regarding the team’s future direction.
An official statement released across Los Leones’ website and social media platforms clarified the situation: “Ernesto Valverde, an Athletic Club legend, has announced that he will not continue as the club’s head coach next season. This decision had already been agreed with the club and is being made public now as we enter the final stretch of the season, with the team focusing on these last 10 LaLiga matches.”
