Real Madrid Fans Cry ‘Corruption’ After Barcelona Player’s Red Card Overturned by VAR

Football News

Real Madrid supporters voiced strong disapproval regarding the standard of officiating in La Liga on Saturday evening. This reaction stemmed from a contentious incident during the match between Atlético Madrid and Barcelona.

Early in the second half at the Metropolitano stadium, it initially appeared that Barcelona would be reduced to ten players. The referee had issued a straight red card to Gerard Martín for a robust challenge on Thiago Almada.

However, the decision was subsequently reviewed by the VAR (Video Assistant Referee) room. The review focused on the fact that Martín made contact with the ball before following through onto Almada.

Following the VAR consultation, the initial red card was overturned, and the Barcelona defender was instead shown a yellow card. This outcome did not sit well with Real Madrid fans.

After their own team suffered a damaging defeat to Mallorca earlier in the day, the Blancos faithful quickly took to social media on Saturday night. Many expressed outrage, highlighting the incident as evidence of what they perceive as ‘corruption’ within Spanish football.
