Real Madrid’s Brahim Díaz has been retroactively crowned an Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) champion following a significant decision by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
In a surprising development, occurring two months after the event, Senegal has been stripped of the AFCON title they won in January, with Morocco now officially declared the victors.
The original final, contested between Senegal and host nation Morocco, was marred by controversy. Senegal’s players briefly left the field after a late penalty was awarded to Morocco. Despite their eventual return, Brahim Díaz subsequently failed to convert the penalty. Senegal ultimately secured a 1-0 victory in extra time.
However, CAF officially overturned this result on Tuesday. According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, citing an official CAF statement, Morocco has been awarded a 3-0 victory, and Senegal has been declared to have forfeited the match. This ruling effectively makes Morocco the AFCON champions.
