La Liga powerhouse Real Madrid has made a substantial move towards potentially bringing back former manager José Mourinho.
The club has officially confirmed that direct discussions have commenced with the Portuguese tactician and his representatives.
Mourinho’s name has recently resurfaced as a strong candidate in Spanish capital sports news.
As Real Madrid seeks a new manager for the 2026/27 season, having lost Álvaro Arbeloa, club president Florentino Pérez is reportedly considering Mourinho among several prominent figures.
As previously indicated, senior figures at the Bernabéu have now signaled that Mourinho is a primary contender for the position.
According to renowned transfer market insider Fabrizio Romano:
“Real Madrid have started José Mourinho operation with direct contacts now taking place. Up to Florentino Pérez: he will decide if Mourinho returns or not.”
It’s also reported that Mourinho’s current club, Benfica, is determined to retain him in Lisbon “at all costs,” despite being aware of Real Madrid’s ongoing discussions.
