Real Madrid’s head coach, Álvaro Arbeloa, succinctly captured the collective frustration of the club following star midfielder Federico Valverde’s controversial red card on Sunday. The incident occurred during Los Blancos’ intense derby clash against city rivals Atlético. Valverde had been a central figure in the game, even scoring a remarkable goal earlier in the match. However, the Uruguayan’s evening came to an abrupt end in the second half.
Following an attempt by Álex Baena – a player with whom Valverde has a noted past – to dribble out of midfield pressure, the Real Madrid star committed a clumsy challenge, bringing him down. Initially, it appeared to be a yellow card offense. However, referee José Luis Munuera made a surprising decision, brandishing a straight red card and dismissing the 27-year-old.
The unexpected dismissal left Real Madrid’s players, staff, and fans, alongside Valverde himself, utterly bewildered. As previously mentioned, Arbeloa perfectly encapsulated this widespread disbelief shortly after. When referee Munuera approached the Real Madrid dugout to address Arbeloa, the coach was distinctly heard exclaiming, “You will see it later! You will see it later!” This statement clearly implied Arbeloa’s conviction that the official had erred significantly and would recognize his mistake upon reviewing post-match replays.
