Serhou Guirassy Powers Dortmund to Club World Cup Quarter-Finals

Bundesliga News

Borussia Dortmund secured their place in the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 quarter-finals, thanks to a first-half double from Serhou Guirassy, which led them to a narrow victory against Mexico`s Monterrey.

Borussia Dortmund 2-1 Monterrey

Goals:

  • 1-0 Guirassy (14`, assist: Adeyemi)
  • 2-0 Guirassy (24`, assist: Adeyemi)
  • 2-1 Berterame (48`)

Having already finished top of Group F unbeaten, Dortmund started strongly in Atlanta. The opening goal arrived in the 14th minute, with Karim Adeyemi skillfully holding up play and setting up Guirassy, who finished precisely into the bottom corner.

Monterrey responded, with Jesús Corona hitting the post from a cross and being flagged offside after a promising run stopped by Gregor Kobel. At the other end, Jobe Bellingham came close to doubling the lead, but it was Guirassy who struck again after a sharp counter-attack, giving BVB a clear advantage.

Guirassy had opportunities to extend Dortmund`s lead further, while Kobel was required to make a save from Corona before halftime.

Monterrey reduced the deficit shortly after the break through Germán Berterame`s close-range header. Érick Aguirre then had a clear chance, but Kobel made another vital save.

Monterrey continued to press, and Berterame had a goal disallowed for offside. Dortmund coach Niko Kovač responded with a double substitution, bringing on Julian Brandt and Yan Couto. Couto quickly created an opportunity for Guirassy, but his shot was blocked.

The substitutions helped Dortmund regain control in midfield. Despite a late header from Sergio Ramos that narrowly missed, BVB held on for the win, setting up a quarter-final match against Xabi Alonso`s Real Madrid in New Jersey on 5 July.
