Following a superb season with VfB Stuttgart, Nick Woltemade is now the standout performer and leading goalscorer at the UEFA U21 European Championship held this summer in Slovakia. No other player in the tournament has currently matched the German striker`s goal tally.
Any remaining doubts about the young attacker`s clinical finishing ability were emphatically silenced by a stunning hat-trick in Germany U21`s opening match, a 3-0 victory over Slovenia last week. This performance served as a powerful reminder of his proficiency in front of goal.
Among his goals against Slovenia, a composed strike with the outside of his boot for the second goal was particularly memorable. The 23-year-old continued his impressive form by scoring another goal with a forceful header and providing two assists in Germany`s subsequent 4-2 win against Czechia, a result that put them at the top of Group B.
The Stuttgart forward currently sits atop the tournament`s scoring charts after the first two rounds of matches, having netted four goals. He holds a one-goal lead over Denmark`s William Osula. The defenders of England U21 are set to face the challenging task of stopping this prolific attacker when they meet Germany on Wednesday, June 18th (9pm CEST).
This exceptional form is a continuation of a strong finish to Woltemade`s club season, where he brought his Bundesliga goal count to 12 for the 2024/25 campaign by scoring in each of the final three matchdays. He also scored the crucial opening goal in Stuttgart`s 4-2 DFB Cup final win against Arminia Bielefeld, finishing as the competition`s top scorer.
Adding to a remarkable spring, the talented forward also earned his first senior caps for the German national team under head coach Julian Nagelsmann in UEFA Nations League matches against Portugal and France in June.
Germany U21 coach Antonio di Salvo praised Woltemade`s impressive record of 11 goals in 15 appearances for the U21 side, saying, `His scoring run with us is incredible, but he has the potential to continue it.` Regardless of how far the team progresses in the tournament, the striker clearly looks poised to keep finding the net. He could potentially face German champions Bayern Munich later this summer in the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup scheduled for August 16th.
