Bayer Leverkusen secures €300,000 from Abdoulaye Faye's loan to Celta Vigo

Bayer Leverkusen has extended the contract of Senegalese centre-back Abdoulaye Faye through 2031 before sending him on loan to Celta Vigo. The 21-year-old will spend the entire 2026/27 season with the La Liga club. The agreement does not include a purchase option. Celta Vigo is reportedly paying Leverkusen a loan fee of approximately €300,000.

Faye joined Bayer Leverkusen from Swedish club BK Häcken last summer for a transfer fee estimated to be between €2.7 million and €3 million. He was part of a group of young players acquired by Leverkusen as future assets.

Faye embarks on second development loan

Last season, Faye was on loan at newly promoted Ligue 1 side Lorient. He appeared in 17 league matches and became a regular starter when fit. However, two significant injury absences limited his playing time. During his tenure in France's top league, Faye also received eight yellow cards.

His move to Lorient was one of 13 outgoing transfers from Leverkusen during their extensive squad overhaul in the summer of 2025.

Celta Vigo will now provide Faye with an opportunity to gain experience in both La Liga and the Europa League, as the Galician club secured sixth place last season, earning them a spot in continental competition.

The Senegalese defender is expected to vie for the left centre-back position with former Spanish international Marcos Alonso, who made 32 league appearances last season and remains a key player in Celta's defense.

In a club statement, Bayer Leverkusen's director of football, Kim Falkenberg, commented: "Abdoulaye Faye possesses great potential, which he demonstrated both last season in France and during the opening weeks of our current preseason. With the loan to Spain, we hope that he will gain further valuable playing experience at a high level and internationally and take the next step in his development."
