Borussia Dortmund & RB Leipzig Eyeing Christopher Nkunku's Return

According to L'Équipe, as reported by FT, both RB Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund are monitoring the situation of former Leipzig striker Christopher Nkunku. The 28-year-old attacker might be on the verge of a Bundesliga comeback as AC Milan is reportedly considering parting ways with him after only a single season. Due to his salary demands, a loan move is considered the most probable outcome.

Nkunku joined Milan from Chelsea last summer for approximately €37 million. However, his uncertain future at the club opens the door for a potential reunion with Leipzig. This scenario echoes discussions from last summer, where Chelsea and RB Leipzig reportedly considered a swap deal involving Nkunku and Xavi Simons.

Borussia Dortmund is reportedly re-evaluating their attacking targets after halting their pursuit of Köln winger Said El Mala. Nkunku's versatility, capable of playing as a No.10, a second striker, or anywhere across the attacking line, would offer a significantly more experienced option. However, his wage demands could pose a considerable obstacle.

RB Leipzig, having recently abandoned a deal to sign Hoffenheim attacker Fisnik Asllani, can offer Nkunku a familiar environment. He knows the club well, enjoyed the most successful period of his career there, and was a significant fan favorite. While a return last summer did not materialize, the current circumstances have changed considerably with Milan reportedly willing to move him on.

The French attacker's outstanding four-year tenure in Saxony, where he scored 70 goals and provided 56 assists in 172 competitive appearances between 2019 and 2023 before his €60 million transfer to Chelsea, remains a strong point of association.

For Dortmund, a return to the Bundesliga would be a more surprising development. Currently, L'Équipe describes a Leipzig return as merely "a possibility," while Dortmund is also said to remain in contention for his signature.
