Mainz 05 Midfield Hit by Two Key Injury Blows

August 8, 2026Pablo Navarro1 мин

Mainz 05 is facing a challenging start to the season with two significant midfield injuries. Paul Nebel will be sidelined for several weeks due to an adductor injury sustained during the team's training camp in Austria. The 23-year-old midfielder felt pain in his groin after taking a shot during the final training session. Subsequent medical examinations confirmed the adductor issue.

This injury means Nebel is likely to miss the DFB-Pokal opening match against VfB Krieschow on August 23rd, and his participation in Mainz's first Bundesliga game against SC Paderborn six days later is now uncertain.

The timing of Nebel's injury is particularly unfortunate, as he had been a key player since returning from a successful loan spell at Karlsruher SC, attracting interest from other clubs. His consistent performances had made him an important part of the first team.

Adding to Mainz's concerns, new signing Eric Martel has also been injured. He suffered medial ligament damage to his right knee during a friendly match against Shabab Al-Ahli. Martel is expected to be out of action until September.

These two injuries present considerable personnel difficulties for Mainz as they prepare for the upcoming Bundesliga season.
