Mainz 05 Prepared to Push Financial Limits in Pursuit of Permanent Stefan Posch Purchase

Mainz 05 is reportedly working to bring Austrian international Stefan Posch back to the Bundesliga on a permanent basis. Following the conclusion of Posch’s successful six-month loan, the club has initiated negotiations with Serie A side Como 1907. Mainz are said to be prepared to stretch their financial limits to secure the 29-year-old defender.

The potential signing of Posch would be a significant acquisition for Mainz, especially after Nadiem Amiri's decision to stay with the club. The club's prudent spending in the current summer transfer market has resulted in an estimated €5.2 million transfer surplus, which could facilitate this move.

Mainz Navigated Complex Posch Deal in January

Mainz initially pursued Posch in the winter transfer window when he was experiencing limited playing time in Italy. The transfer involved a three-club arrangement: Como first activated an obligation to purchase Posch from Bologna for approximately €5.5 million and then immediately loaned him to Mainz for the remainder of the season.

Crucially, Mainz did not secure a purchase option in the initial loan agreement. The Bundesliga club reportedly paid a loan fee of around €200,000, necessitating a new negotiation for a permanent transfer this summer.

Posch made an immediate impact upon his arrival. He started against Wolfsburg just two days after joining and delivered a strong performance in a vital victory. His familiarity with German football, having previously played over 100 Bundesliga games for Hoffenheim before his move to Serie A in 2022, aided his swift integration.

Stefan Posch Became a Key Figure in Mainz's Defense

The Austrian defender subsequently started in all of Mainz’s remaining 16 Bundesliga matches. His experience, physicality, and defensive capabilities on the right side of a back three made him a crucial component of Urs Fischer’s system. Despite the team fighting relegation upon his arrival, Mainz ultimately recovered to finish tenth.

Posch also contributed decisive moments during Mainz's historic Conference League campaign. He scored the opening goal in a round-of-16 victory over Sigma Olomouc, helping the team advance to its first European quarter-final. He and teammate Danny da Costa attributed the team's success to the "awesome and outstanding" atmosphere at the MEWA Arena.

He further enhanced his case for a permanent transfer with a spectacular acrobatic volley against Racing Strasbourg in the first leg of the quarter-final, contributing to a 2-0 victory.

Financial Challenges Remain

While Como's willingness to negotiate offers encouragement, the Italian club is expected to seek fair compensation for a player they acquired permanently only in January. Mainz must therefore negotiate a fee and payment structure that satisfies Como without jeopardizing their overall summer transfer plans.

The player's strong desire to return to Mainz could be instrumental if the club needs Como to lower its initial demands or accept an installment-based payment plan. Sporting CEO Christian Heidel has confirmed that the club is in discussions with the Serie A outfit.

“This is definitely still on the table,” Heidel stated. “Posch won’t resume training with Como until Monday. We would like to make this happen and now need to see whether we can find a solution with Como that is acceptable to both sides. He would like to come back, and Como are, in principle, also open to talks.”
