Schalke 04 Extends Contract with Striker Edin Džeko

Schalke 04 has officially secured the services of veteran striker Edin Džeko for the 2026/27 Bundesliga season, a move that significantly boosts the newly promoted club. This extension comes amidst other team developments, including Robin Gosens' thigh injury and the collapse of Jesper Lindstrøm's proposed transfer from Napoli.

The 40-year-old forward has signed a one-year deal through the summer of 2027 and will continue to wear Schalke's number 10 jersey. Džeko is reportedly set to earn an annual base salary of approximately €900,000, with performance-based bonuses potentially increasing his earnings to €1.3 million. This places him among Schalke's highest-paid players, alongside Robin Gosens, Kenan Karaman, and Loris Karius.

Schalke had previously reached an agreement with Džeko, with only final medical and administrative procedures pending official confirmation. The club's wage budget also saw additional flexibility following the free transfer of Maximilian Wöber, an Austrian defender whose contract is heavily performance-related due to his recent injury history.

Džeko joined Schalke in the winter transfer window and played a pivotal role in the team's successful promotion campaign. Despite missing several weeks due to a shoulder injury, the Bosnia and Herzegovina international contributed six goals and three assists in 11 appearances in the second tier. The upcoming season will mark Džeko's first Bundesliga campaign since his departure from Wolfsburg in January 2011. He previously won the Bundesliga title with Wolfsburg in 2009 and was the league's top scorer with 22 goals the following year. At over 40 years old, Džeko is poised to become one of the ten oldest players in Bundesliga history.
