Sebastian Kehl Departs Borussia Dortmund as Sporting Director Immediately
Borussia Dortmund has officially announced the immediate departure of its sporting director, Sebastian Kehl.
Kehl's extensive history with the club spans over two decades. He initially joined as a player in 2002, transitioning to a directorial role in 2018, before succeeding Michael Zorc as sporting director in 2022.
Reflecting on his departure, Kehl shared:
"Borussia Dortmund has been a significant part of my life for half its duration, and I share an extremely strong bond with this remarkable club. However, we have collectively concluded that it is time for both BVB and myself to move forward. Lars, Carsten, and I reached this decision today after a productive discussion. I am profoundly indebted to Borussia Dortmund and proud to have been a member of the BVB family for approximately 24 years.
During this period, I celebrated numerous incredible successes with the club, its staff, and its amazing supporters, which will forever be a source of pride, being part of its history. The groundwork has been established, and I wish the club all the best in its restructuring and continued achievements. Borussia Dortmund, its magnificent stadium, and the South Stand will always hold a cherished place in my heart. It has truly been an honor."
Reports last week hinted at ongoing friction between director Lars Ricken and Kehl, suggesting Kehl's future was reportedly dependent on Ricken's decision. Commenting on the separation from his former teammate, Ricken remarked:
"Following a very candid discussion, Sebastian Kehl, Carsten Cramer, and I mutually determined that summer is the appropriate time for changes. To facilitate preparation for both parties, we agreed to an immediate termination of Sebastian's contract. Sebastian and I also share a lengthy history; we not only played for Borussia Dortmund together but also secured the German championship in 2002. Sebastian has made immense contributions to our club, and we are profoundly grateful for his significant dedication."
What's Next for Dortmund and Kehl?
Doubts regarding Kehl's performance have circulated for some time, and with his contract set to expire in 2027, an extension seemed uncertain. Furthermore, the former midfielder has been linked as a potential successor to Stefan Kuntz at Hamburg. Whether the unusual timing of this decision is connected to a potential move to HSV remains to be seen.
For Dortmund, the name of Markus Krösche is expected to gain considerable attention. There have been previous contacts between the Eintracht Frankfurt sporting CEO and die Schwarzgelben, and it is yet to be determined if this will materialize.
This development could also impact summer planning, as the club currently lacks a leader for squad development. A replacement must be found swiftly to avoid a potentially chaotic summer for Dortmund.
