1. FC Köln consider move for Union Berlin defensive midfield leader Rani Khedira
Sky Germany's Marlon Irlbacher reports that 1. FC Köln are exploring a move for experienced Union Berlin midfielder Rani Khedira. The club is currently seeking a new leader in defensive midfield. Irlbacher notes that concrete negotiations between the two Bundesliga clubs have not yet commenced.
Köln is currently holding discussions with the 32-year-old's management to assess the feasibility of a transfer. If a basic understanding is reached with the player's representatives, an approach to Union Berlin could follow.
Earlier this summer, Khedira was also linked with Borussia Mönchengladbach, but that move did not materialize.
Köln continue search for experienced No. 6
Khedira fits the profile Köln has been targeting throughout the summer. The acquisition of an experienced holding midfielder remains a high priority for the club following Eric Martel's departure for Mainz 05. Köln has already signed Australian international Paul Okon-Engstler from Sydney FC for approximately €1 million.
The 21-year-old Okon-Engstler can play as either a No. 6 or No. 8 and impressed for Australia at the World Cup. However, he arrives as a developmental prospect, representing a significant step up from the A-League to Bundesliga football.
Consequently, Köln continues its search for a more experienced midfielder capable of providing immediate stability. Their efforts have yielded little success thus far. Wolfsburg rejected Köln's approach for Vinicius Souza, proposing a loan with a purchase option, but the relegated Wolfsburg currently intends to keep the midfielder for their promotion campaign.
Former Köln midfielder Ellyes Skhiri was also considered before the club decided to pursue other options. West Ham midfielder Edson Álvarez has also been linked, although financial considerations make such a move difficult.
Rani Khedira brings precisely the leadership Köln seek
The veteran's appeal extends beyond his role as a conventional defensive midfielder. Khedira has become one of Union Berlin's most important senior figures since joining the club and often assumes additional leadership responsibilities when captain Christopher Trimmel is unavailable.
Khedira demonstrated his significance during challenging periods last season. Following a particularly poor defeat against Heidenheim in April, Khedira publicly took responsibility for Union's performance and acknowledged the frustrations of the traveling supporters.
Khedira still offers significant sporting value
The 32-year-old remains capable of directly influencing Bundesliga matches. Khedira was named Player of the Match in Union's 1-1 draw with Eintracht Frankfurt in February. He won 78 percent of his ground duels, lost only one of four aerial duels, consistently helped launch Union's counterattacks, and ultimately drew the penalty that led to the team's equalizer.
The newly arrived Okon-Engstler brings youth, potential, and technical ability. Khedira, on the other hand, would provide Bundesliga experience, defensive reliability, and an established leadership presence.
