Veteran German footballer Leonardo Bittencourt recently expressed profound appreciation for Werder Bremen, his long-standing club, following a commemorative event on Saturday. His Bundesliga team paid tribute to his 300th appearance in the league by presenting him with a special jersey. Consequently, an enhanced police presence was deployed around the Volkswagen Arena as a precautionary measure.

Regrettably, these security measures proved insufficient to prevent altercations outside the venue. A confrontation with police delayed the entry of Bremen ultras into the stadium. It was confirmed that the events unfolding outside the stadium constituted a riot. The incident resulted in injuries to three local police officers and the detention of ten visiting Bremen supporters. In a show of protest, at least one Bremen ultra faction chose to boycott the match entirely.

Leonardo Bittencourt Celebrates Amidst Farewell

The 32-year-old player is set to leave Bremen this summer once his current contract concludes. Before his tenure with the Hanseaten, Bittencourt also featured for Borussia Dortmund, Köln, and Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga, with these three clubs contributing 84 to his total of 300 top-flight appearances. This history makes it understandable why Werder holds such a special place in Bittencourt's affections.

Bittencourt initially arrived in Bremen on loan from Hoffenheim during the 2019/20 season, making his move permanent the subsequent summer for €7 million. A native of Leipzig and a product of the Energie Cottbus academy, he demonstrated unwavering loyalty to Bremen following their relegation in 2020/21, playing one of his seven consecutive seasons with the club in the 2.
