Wolfsburg Coach Dieter Hecking Slams "Abysmal" Refereeing After Leverkusen Thrashing

Wolfsburg's struggles intensified on Saturday afternoon as their Bundesliga winless run stretched to 11 matches following a dramatic 6-3 defeat against Bayer Leverkusen. Despite initially building a promising 3-1 lead against the formidable hosts on matchday 28, the German Wolves capitulated, conceding five unanswered goals to seal their fate.

Following the match, newly appointed Wolfsburg head coach Dieter Hecking launched a scathing attack on referee Martin Petersen and the Bundesliga VAR team. While initially listing the match officiating as the "third reason" for the loss in his interview with Sky Germany, Hecking's frustration became far more evident during the subsequent post-match press conference.

Hecking Criticizes Refereeing Heavily

"Today, the referee's performance simply fell short of Bundesliga standards," Hecking declared to Sky. "The penalty awarded against us for the 1-1 goal was soft, yet it stood, while a clear penalty for us at 1-3 was initially waved off."

Hecking continued, "Then there was an elbow from Tapsoba, which should have resulted in a yellow-red card dismissal. Coincidentally, that very player later scored their fourth goal, making it 4-3. Prior to that 4-3 goal, a Leverkusen player clearly ran into [Denis] Vavro, ramming him, and VAR failed to penalize it."

Re-emphasizing the Tapsoba incident, Hecking concluded, "A player who shouldn't have been on the field after our 1-3 lead ended up scoring. That's undoubtedly one of the key narratives of this game. We firmly believe we were poorly officiated in three or four critical situations today."

At the start of his post-match press conference, Hecking further elaborated, "We were hit with another penalty [for the 3-3 goal] in the 53rd minute. Subsequently, a corner kick was awarded that perhaps shouldn't have been, directly leading to their 4-3 goal."

"Before any questions are even asked, I want to address the officiating," Hecking stated. "Far be it from me to suggest that the refereeing alone accounts for six goals conceded, but the performance today was truly abysmal. We faced unjust penalties today."

Responding to a follow-up question, Hecking added, "One must consider the stakes today and how the refereeing influenced the players. As a coach, I must focus on what's within my control, and I'll be the first to admit we cannot concede six goals."

Hecking reflected on the potential impact: "Imagine how differently the match could have unfolded, especially given Wolfsburg's precarious position. Martin Petersen will likely officiate a better game next week. Our team showed spirit and was well-positioned to win today, but they were undeniably thrown off course."

Hecking concluded with a plea for improvement: "Next week, I hope we defend better, and I hope Martin Petersen has a better match."
