Despite recent challenges and layoffs, Bungie's new leadership has announced a significant shift in strategy, confirming that the Destiny franchise is far from over. The studio is committed to restoring Destiny 2 and continuing the development of Marathon.

Following the release of Monument of Lost Lights, a well-received update for Destiny 2, the community expressed a strong desire for the game's future and potential sequels. Efforts like Project Sunrise, aimed at restoring lost PC content, highlight this passion.

On September 21, 2026, Studio Head Poria Torkan and Marathon General Manager Josh Deane shared Bungie's renewed vision. Their core message is clear: Destiny is central to Bungie's future, Destiny 2 will be revitalized, and Marathon will evolve.

"Your voices mattered, and your engagement made a real impact," Bungie stated, acknowledging the community's role in shaping the studio's direction. They emphasized that Destiny remains fundamental, with more stories to tell and worlds to build. The goal is to recapture the original magic of Destiny—its mystery, meaningful discovery, and the unity of Guardians facing impossible odds.

A key part of this restoration involves reintroducing significant content that was removed from Destiny 2 with the launch of the Beyond Light expansion in November 2020. Bungie acknowledges the negative impact of the Destiny Content Vault (DCV) and plans to bring back campaigns, destinations, and Raids. This process will require updating lighting, encounters, combatants, and other underlying systems to meet current standards.

Players can anticipate the return of content like The Red War, the Year 1 DLCs The Curse of Osiris and Warmind, and the Forsaken expansion. This includes revisiting locations such as Titan, Io, Mercury, and Mars, as well as tackling raids like Leviathan.

While Destiny 2 undergoes restoration, Marathon is also set to evolve. Bungie admits the extraction shooter hasn't reached its intended player base and needs further development. Future updates for Marathon will focus on enhancing the survival experience, improving combat, world design, and competitive tension, with plans for at least a second year of content.

Internally, Bungie is implementing changes to foster greater decision-making by game teams, simplify priorities, and redefine success metrics to focus on player satisfaction. The leadership recognizes that rebuilding trust is paramount and must be earned through the quality of their games and consistent player engagement.

"We lost trust, we lost exceptional colleagues, and we lost sight of what we should prioritize: our players," the new leadership admitted. "As the new leadership team, we have to own that. We’re not just listening to your feedback, we understand your disappointment. We’re not asking you to take our word for it today. We know trust is earned through the quality of our games, the decisions we make, and our consistency with our players."

The studio is hopeful that this new direction will lead to positive outcomes for both Bungie and its player base.
