PS6 Controller: Is Sony Already Preparing a DualSense Successor?

Speculation about the future PS6 controller is rampant on social media, with numerous videos, illustrations, and alleged leaks surfacing. However, concrete evidence like credible prototype photographs, development kit videos, or industrial technical specifications for the next-generation PlayStation controller remains absent.

Currently, what are often presented as PS6 controller 'leaks' are primarily Sony patents interpreted as rumors.

This distinction is crucial. Many technologies recently touted as leaks originate from publicly accessible documents filed by Sony. While these patents authentically reveal the research efforts of the manufacturer's teams, they do not guarantee that products incorporating these technologies will reach the market.

One of the most discussed patent filings, identified by the reference US20240269548A1, was submitted in February 2023 and published in August 2024, with a US grant expected in January 2026. It describes a controller equipped with surfaces capable of detecting touch, pressure, various gestures, and even finger proximity before contact.

The primary advantage of this system would be the ability to reconfigure control layouts. Players could theoretically move interactive areas, change their functions, or adjust their positions to suit their hand size. The patent specifically mentions touch controls that can emulate different input types, including joystick functionality.

This document is also the source of numerous headlines suggesting a hypothetical PS6 controller without buttons. While the patent does outline this possibility, it represents only one of several envisioned configurations. Sony also notes that these surfaces could be used in conjunction with traditional physical buttons.

This nuance significantly alters the interpretation of the patent. Controllers are typically used without visual focus. Directional pads, analog sticks, buttons, and triggers serve as physical landmarks, allowing fingers to quickly locate their intended positions. Eliminating all physical controls would necessitate replicating these landmarks in another manner. However, the patent primarily details finger detection and the reconfiguration of input zones, rather than a system capable of mechanically recreating the tactile sensation of buttons. Therefore, a hybrid solution appears far more realistic than a completely smooth surface. Nevertheless, Sony is also exploring another approach to making its controllers customizable.

A much more recent patent, published on July 16, 2026, under the reference US20260199776A1, presents a modular game controller. Instead of virtually repositioning controls, this concept allows for the physical relocation of various controller components. The documents specifically mention joysticks, a directional pad, a camera, and modules that could feature their own graphical interfaces.

This idea aligns with a philosophy already partially present in the PlayStation ecosystem. The DualSense Edge enables the replacement of certain components and extensive customization of control configurations. The Access Controller goes even further, allowing users to physically adapt their device to their specific needs.

Therefore, the modularity of a future controller might not represent a complete departure from Sony's current offerings. It could serve multiple purposes: personalization, accessibility, easier replacement of parts, or the creation of an ecosystem of optional modules. However, there is no certainty that this architecture will be implemented in the standard PS6 controller.

A highly modular system also presents challenges: connector durability, element locking mechanisms, calibration, long-term reliability, and, naturally, manufacturing costs. Such a solution might therefore be reserved for a high-end controller or specialized peripherals.

At this stage, these two patents are particularly interesting as they address the same problem from different angles. In one case, Sony envisions virtually relocating controls. In the other, it considers physically moving them. The desire to enable controllers to better adapt to the player clearly emerges as a significant research direction. However, this is only one facet of Sony's ongoing developments.
