Romero was involved in several contentious moments in the match against Real Madrid. He received a yellow card for a challenge on Jude Bellingham, a decision Real Madrid supporters felt should have been a red.

Stopper Romero was of course at the heart of one of a number of controversial incidents in Sunday’s showdown between Atlético and Real Madrid. En route to an eventual 2-1 triumph for the former, the Argentine was responsible for a challenge on Jude Bellingham which those of a Real Madrid persuasion were adamant was deserving of a red card. Romero ultimately escaped with just a yellow, before teammate Lee Kang-in also avoided dismissal for a dangerous tackle on Federico Valverde later in the first-half. Despite as much, though, upon the referee’s whistle bringing the opening 45 minutes to a close in the Spanish capital, Romero was adamant that it was he and his teammates who had been hard done by.
